Mardi 5 Novembre ★ MacCarthyism then and now
Conférence en anglais | 18h30 | Auditorium de l’IFA – Présentée par Andrew Feffer*
Why is it that the specter of McCarthyism is once again haunting the United States? Does the «new McCarthyism» decried by Republicans like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have anything to do with the real history of political repression spearheaded in the 1950s by right-wing extremists like Senator Joe McCarthy? Or is something else going on? Feffer will offer a historical perspective on complaints like McConnell’s about the «new McCarthyism,» as well as on the real threat of political repression in Trump’s America.
*Andrew Feffer is Professor of History and co-director of Film Studies at Union College in Schenectady, NY. A specialist in the history of left-wing and liberal political culture in the United States, Feffer most recently has authored Bad Faith: Teachers, Liberalism, and the Origins of McCarthyism (Fordham University Press, 2019),a study of an anticommunist witch hunt that unfolded in New York City between 1940 and 1942.
